Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems (SVCHS) held multiple donation drives at each site during the month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Each site, Meadowview Health Clinic, Saltville Medical Center, T.K. McKee, Tazewell Community Health Center, and Twin City Medical Center, held a scarf and hat drive, which yielded a large box filled with scarves and hats to be used by cancer patients. Each Friday, employees donated $1 to wear jeans and pink in support of breast cancer awareness, which yielded a total of $160. This money was used to purchase 8 Food City gift cards to be used by patients who need financial assistance with gas getting to appointments and groceries.
Judy Coomer, Site Manager of Twin City Medical Center in Bristol, Va. said, “Breast cancer is a serious disease that affects millions of people and their family every year. It takes everyone to raise awareness, and employees were happy to be a part of this participation.”
SVCHS plans to turn this awareness month into a yearly event that helps benefit cancer patients in the area.
