Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems’ New Day Recovery Receives Two HRSA Grants and Hosts Congressman Griffth for a Tour

–  New Day Recovery Saltville met with Virginia’s 9th Congressional District Congressman Morgan Griffith on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, for a tour of the New Day Recovery facility and discuss the plans for the two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grants to help our patients on their journey of recovery from both substance use disorders (SUD) and mental illness. We were awarded the Behavioral Health Services Expansion (BHSE) Grant and the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) – Impact Awards.

Both grants were competitive and SVCHS was 1 of 6 in the state of Virginia to receive the BHSE grant and the only organization in Virginia to receive the RCORP grant of which only 18 were awarded in the nation.  SVCHS successfully presented to HRSA the need for increased SUD and mental illness services as well as an evidence based and creative plan to meet those needs, which includes plans for expansion with the RCORP Impact grant funds including peer recovery and outreach services to support patients’ social determinants of health and help them feel valuable and supported in their recovery.

The grants will provide new service offerings at our NDR sites in Bristol, Tazewell, and Saltville as well as outpatient counseling and referrals for our school based health clinics and Bristol Community Health Center. The BHSE grant includes behavioral health outpatient counseling support for our school based health clinics, our increasing behavioral health referrals from our Bristol Community Health Center, as well as program offerings for mandated patients from our community partners.

New Day Recovery and Behavioral Health Director, Marcy Rosenbaum, LCSW, CSAC, said, “Congressman Griffith seemed pleased with all the services NDR provides to patients and the community and excited about the expansion of services to support lifelong recovery.

Both grants include funding for a concept developed by Melissa Doane-Williams, LCSW, CSAC who is the New Day Recovery (NDR) Behavioral Health Manager.  She and her staff created the concept of a Community of Hope which is designed to focus on helping patients feel valuable and worthy of recovery while helping them address their social determinants of health such as employment, transportation, clothing and food insecurities, social skills, leisure activities and educational opportunities. Some of the services will include peer supports and community resource navigation.

Within the Community of Hope, we plan to partner with other community resources and organizations to remove access barriers and build bridges between our organizations to better serve our patients and others in the community.

If any community organization is interested in partnering with us in some way, please reach out to Melissa Doane-Williams at 276-496-4492 ext. 1034.
